Oro Valley has an active community that enjoys our terrific weather and recreational activities at various park facilities throughout the town. Our Parks and Recreation Department’s goal is “Enhancing the quality of life for all Oro Valley residents by providing exceptional parks, recreation, and trail facilities and offering a wide range of programs and activities for all ages.”
I am a strong proponent of the parks and recreational assets found throughout Oro Valley. As such, I believe it is important to continually explore innovative ways to enhance our existing recreational amenities, such as the continued development of Naranja Park on a Pay as You Go basis. We must also search for new opportunities to expand offerings to our current residents and the younger families moving here, including converting the former Vistoso Golf Course to a nature park.
While serving as your council member in 2010, I helped lead the conversation for the renovation and expansion of the Oro Valley Aquatics Center. Driven by input from the local community and swim teams, Council conducted a feasibility study and funded the project – which is now “Southern Arizona’s premier, competition-level facility,” attracting swimmers from across the United States and visitors to our town.
The Town’s El Conquistador Golf and Tennis and Community Center operation offers fitness classes, adult/senior programs, youth camps and pickleball. While on Council, I voted against the initial purchase of said course, which I felt would continue to lose money under town ownership. In addition, the community center building was not ADA compliant and needed millions in repairs and improvements to become fully operational.
Fast forward to today and the Community Center is still not ADA compliant. Residents and visitors struggle with these issues daily. I am committed to making this facility ADA compliant and providing adequate facilities for the programs’ that residents enjoy.
Additionally, I support increasing the amenities offered based on the Parks and Recreation Needs Assessment and Master Plan currently in process. Please click HERE to learn more about the parks and recreation survey.
I will also continue to advocate for existing infrastructure improvements at Steam Pump Ranch and the acquisition of additional park space to meet the needs of the residents.
